turning into Bukowski

turning into Bukowski

A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto

turning into Bukowski

i fell in love with...

pastured parliaments, mad rivers of righteous clarity

autumns in New England

and Eiffel Towers in the Bronx

that paled in comparison

to that foreign one that wasn't surrounded

by graffiti

and hop scotch chalk lines

and disheveled poets

on street corners

trying to sell their words for a few drinks

and that spit shine

fella dreaming of collared shirts

and brazen ties

bought for the company Christmas affair

and maybe a back room mama

who had one too many,

and was giving something besides

a grab bag present,

or maybe she wasn't

and then i blinked

and fell out of love with...

imagined pretense

subway thoughts, underground morals

teenage angst

dreams of Europe

and strolled ever so pretentiously

into a 9 to 5 existence

sweating ink onto pages

of routine banishment

an exile into a normal life

begging for another fantasy

then settling for a drink or three

to forget who i really am.

I enjoyed the poetry.
"begging for another fantasy

Direct and honest life make us see the real darkness and some light if we are lucky. Thank you for sharing the excellent poetry my friend.

You are welcome.
Really love "strolling pretentiously into a 9 to 5 existence" "exile into a normal life". I have such a feeling of wanderlust at this point in my life and a true fear i may never experience extended periods of travel. I really love how the word choice was both negative and positive connotations. Pretentious stroll, exile and normal life. Something that should be positive but you just arent feeling the same way about it.

really appreciate your insights, Julia...your review is better than the poem.

Love it … I used to think it was important to know who I really was and then I realized like everything and everyone I was changing and I was better off just enjoying the ride. A really fine write, Jacob.

thank you for sharing how you relate to this, Pryde...
and the kind words.

obvious to anyone that you have a keen insight into his work and what made him tick. he was indeed a complex character. some considered him a maverick, others considered him depraved and weak, using a false bravado to shield his fragile ego. either way, this piece depicts the speaker's angst at turning into him....

exceptional piece.

I can relate to this. The flow of words. The melancholy world of lost dreams which is the 9 to 5 grind. The last drink of the day. We are the Giants lost in a world created by the deaf, dumb, and blind suits. This. This separates you from the mundane. CD

Looked him up..... Reminds me of a Humfrey Bogart .. Tough look. perhaps too many tough looks into reality can turn into physicality too.
Hmmm....... Your whole writing style seem to take a dramatic shift on this one.
I'm left to ponder all you were thinking on this..beyond the write...........
it is different.. A different beat, rhythm, tone...... very different, almost another voice.

Yup.. I vote this one into your "Poems Hall of Fame" Book
It is different from he rest. Another fractal view of you, and nice one at that, write that is... The view.......Is neither good or bad .. Just is.....
