playing for keeps at little cost

payment rendered for goodbyes

 

a "see" note

scribbled and placed

next to the unused coffee cup

and the shunned slice of toast

 

 

he feels he was hired short term

and now has been let go

for another, less expensive love

who won't care

 

that she never stays for breakfast.

Aren't most people always looking for the next best thing.? Jobs, cars, houses, spouses?? What is here today will be gone tomorrow. The contract is getting where it's cheapened or sweetened.. sadly these things extend even to the most promised of relationships in all aspects of life. ..no one is exempt from being replaced at a moment's notice. Love IS a contract and in this disposable world you don't hear of couple's reaching their 50th anniversary as much as you used to (and casual love doesn't even, as you suggest, hang around for breakfast). Now, THIS is brilliant! I love how you take something seemingly unrelated and equate it to love. A contract indeed! Both parties have to be mutually accepting. If not, the contract is easily broken. Hell! For that matter, even in this day and age, even if one signs on the dotted line, it doesn't mean that it lasts forever. It's a sad testament of our place in time.

reminds me of the Carol King/James Taylor song; "doesn't anyone stay in one place anymore" or something along those lines.. not sure I like the idea of "contract" though, too possessive and domineering... but the idea is good especially when done from the view of an "adjunct" as metaphor... guess I look at it more as "commitment" a voluntary thing... but the question of why has this become less these days is something to ponder.. it's a good poem Jacob
