Lock Box

Lock Box

A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto

Lock Box

you approached my heart

like it was walking on the boulevard

among street hustlers

there is always a price, for

a night of loving,

a month,

a year of hopeful engaging,

wispy dreams of forever wearing out their shoes

all the enticing smiles provoking the emotional wallet

to magically appear,

"how much?" he secrets to her,

"let's talk price, later" she confides

he takes her hand,

and they walk to the moon,

spend a short eternity in the back seat of a rising star

then suddenly, he wakes up in a dark sky

with an empty billfold,

and indifference locked away in an impenetrable vault

of wizened, cynical years.

"there is always a price, for
a night of loving,
a month,
a year of hopeful engaging,
wispy dreams of forever wearing out their shoes". The latter seems to echo the ascetic assertions of Buddha - pleasure results in pain. It's a thought I've pondered myself.
Lovely work as always.

Another very good write, Jacob.

A wonderful piece about love and life through the years and the emotional currency involved to maintain that love.

Well written.

A beautiful perception of love between people and how honesty comes to play after years of being together. Going through turmoil and great times during life with another person…

Jacob, I like this piece it had some great off beat imagery. My favorite is the first stanza, perhaps because I find it so relatable. I'd make one small change and open with she instead of you. The change in focus was a bit of for me...But maybe you wanted the distancing?

I beg to differ...
love is not meant to give you anything other than the joy of giving it away without expectation or demand. Any love less than unconditional and existing without need or desire for reward, any love that looks beyond the single moment of actual existence...not even love at all.

My whole point is that, right or wrong, ALWAYS worth it.

gotcha!.....
"The emotional wallet"...loved the concept of that. If only we could fill the wallet by going to the bank and making a withdrawal! You took me back to the days of the "submarine races" and "love by the dashboard lights" with this one. Alas, the world will never be as full of promise as it was back then, will it? We are wizened and cynical, but you know what? That is not such a bad thing. Always a pleasure to read you. Happy Valentine's Day, my friend. Lydi**
