a fifth of sanity

a fifth of sanity

A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto

a fifth of sanity

a splash of Beethoven

the swirls in serious collusion

dark waters

silent ponds

no sounds, just vibrations 'neath the waves

of reality

we are the fifth symphony bleeding into the ninth

a disruption of faith,

a world gone as mad as he

and the music in odd tones

writhing like a lizard mind

i feel violins erupt with the words i write

purpose as blunt as muffled percussion

the conductor in peculiar pantomime

seduces me to poetic recourse

an intercourse of uneasy feelings

i long for some soothing Schubert

knowing i am but an unfinished symphony,

taking long walks in a clustered wood....

Not of the vintage "long-haired."
Your musical citations may as well be rap references.
For me, metaphors galore and deep, novel insights more than carry the day.
Impressive offering, Jacob!

Swirling around us- the media brings world problems right to our doorsteps. We simply the strange effect "writhing like a lizard mind." What a line! Yes nothing in this world stays permanent for long but oh the comfort of reading people like you. Then I am not so alone............Thank your for your insight. I do need it.............Bless you so much. Jacob! Kathy

It would be nice to have a true day with only good and true things on the news, like listening to sweet music, not the wild things that show a world that is going crazy. Valentine

I enjoyed this poem and you are welcome my friend.
One line in this screamed the incoming POTUS and his recent bizzare arms race declarations.
I wonder if he knows they are REAL nuclear weapons?

We all my be lead into a coda this year J.
But Merry Christmas all the same ;)

yes, we may...Tony...so true.

thank you for your words,

At first I thought you were writing about the terror attack in Berlin. Certainly a disruption of faith! Then your words seemed more introspective to me. We all are unfinished symphonies and I don't think we can write the grand finale. Your mind is a clustered wood, my friend. When you write, you allow us to take a walk with you and it is always worthwhile. Lydi**

sometimes in reading i have to sit and soak it in when reaching the closing ..much like listening to classical music .. your title and first verse gave me thoughts of a fine whiskey in a glass ...swirling .. i enjoyed all of this ..but have to say that this line:
" writhing like a lizard mind" is a knock out for me .. vivid and emotive as can be .. uncomfortable feeling for sure .. a humble closing ..apt as listening to those "Masters" does make one feel a bit woody but elevated at the same time .. nice one jacob!

ps. also have to mention your "..conductor in peculiar pantomime" ..spot on perfect says i!

I hear the symphony calling you back, your wand magically floating in the storm of the air, the audience pleading for more. Won't you come back maestro?

Al

I don't remember the last time I stopped by your page, but has been a long time. Your title is amusing. Because while I figure the fifth is referring to the fifth symphony of Beethoven I realise the title could also be 1/5th of sanity? As I read along, I can see you splash Beethoven in your poetry canvas, as would the readers be shown the chaos not only present in the words but also how their mind processes this chaos. Your line: writhing like a lizard mind. I rather imagine a cut off lizard's tail which writhes for quite sometime even after being cut of. The poem is as clear as how literal or metaphorical one interprets it. But I see the more metaphor side of it with the case of a certain unfinished feeling the poem leaves at the end. Bravo.
