A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto

a service of sorts

i put the ashes of us back together
just for an impulsive look at what we were
now, a lasting impression
of what could have been

burns into my heart
like the match we once struck
before the cold fire of regret
set in

and made us only a blue afterglow.

thank you, Al....appreciate your visit.

Soul-wrenching regret, a deeply felt, heartbroken perspective that would not have existed had what might have been, been. Yet, should the poet's dream be somehow suddenly fulfilled, he would likely eventually discover something else to longingly regret--perhaps, being trapped in a hellish relationship.
The greener grass of another timeline is almost always more mocking mirage than lusher pasture.
Impressive creation, Jacob!

I think you are much too kind, Jacob.
Your poetry is exceptional.
Aloha Jacob, I think regret is the lingering burn, always there. Another incredible poem. Izzy

You're welcome
heart break is so painful. It's good that we aren't alone in such experiences..meaning we all go through it it seems...better to have had love and lost it!

always a bad idea to put those ashes of what was or could have been together again... funny but not humorous, at the way looking back continues to scorch and burn... add my name to the loooong list of those who loved that last line Jacob, that blue afterglow...

A 'smoke alarm' might have prevented this sad demise.
Brilliant imagery Jacob.

Honest and strong words and thoughts my friend.
The cold fire of regret. Burn our heart and mind forever. Perfect ending to a outstanding poem.

Possibly a truer meaning of heartburn. Not antacids we can take for this however. Remarkable as always Jacob.

If only we could regret, before the final regret. It might all have been different. Suppose that's why they sell matches.
