the ASCAP blues

A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto

the ASCAP blues

i'm a too long song

trying to break onto your chart

a heart playing taps

as winter's mood revises itself

into a spring reveille

if only you could pretend

that a heart's sales are good enough

i would spin you into forever

the "B" side just as willing.

I thought of Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen. That was a too long song that was very nearly not played to the public. It was only the wonderful and maverick Kenny Everett who went against the grain and played it. Then it went into orbit. A masterpiece in music. That's where your lines took me Jacob.

Just seen the film for the second time. I'm still buzzing from it:)
Love this stellar wordplay and metaphor j. I was a member of ASCAP, but couldn’t keep up the dues when the royalties dried up. I get this. He was a song from the heart who couldn’t afford her cold payola. A sad tune on the B side. Drop the needle.
