napkin notes on the kitchen table

leftovers of us

packed in suitcases

goodbyes only refrigerate for three days

before going bad,

 

but your love's expiration date

picked up the pen

the day i bought it.

 

now i am using that napkin

to wipe away the mess

my eyes made.

This is one of the best "goodbye" poems that I've read of yours. Your analogies coalesce into a sparkling "whole" that delivers the sad enchilada with sauce dripping red. wow... I love that line - "goodbyes only refrigerate for three days.." makes me think of the way our feelings can change when we have too much time to think over them. not thinking at all and just picking up the pen being the alternative.. and the one i much prefer.. good one :)

the most important meal of the day is that one that was your favourite and you only have leftovers now and even though you may want to hang on to them to make them last it's best to just get it over with before they spoil. closure is a good thing, not good to drag it out. just my own weird interpretation of your poem. :) sometimes I don't even know if I make sense to anyone but myself.
