epitaph

epitaph

A Poem by James Paulin

if words were lived as highest hopes

every traveler journeyed as foretold

every pitfall, storm and peril coped

except times stumbled, a hundredfold

virtue prized, embraced and worn

merits words of highest acclaim

God’s purpose to which all are born

still most fail, our self to blame

some tombstones bear quips and quotes

most serve to mark names and dates

curiously few proclaim personal notes

giving glimpses of character traits

if parting words were penned by each

there would be advice and admonition

as if their lives were written to teach

inscribed to benefit the human condition

Hmmm. I like the sentiment. I see why you sent me the read request considering you just read Piss and Vinegar. The first line though. Highest hoped. It doesn't sit well with me. It's not wrong, per se, I guess my mind is too programed to read "highest hopes" and so I struggle with the past tense use of the phrase.
