Insectabet

Insectabet

A Poem by James Paulin

Ants come in sizes hard to see

Beatles excel in density

Centipedes know which leg will start

Dragonfly wings take rest apart

Earwigs do not creep in your head

Fireflies glow or flash instead

Gnats go unnoticed being so small

Houseflies garner complaints from all

Inchworms become moths seeking nests

June bugs won’t win beauty contests

Katydids sing their mating call

Ladybugs spread good luck to all

Mosquitoes bring repellant out

Nymphs like rivers as food for trout

Onion maggots tempt their own fate

Praying mantis consume their mate

Queen rules as each bee is aware

Recluse spiders bite, so beware

Silverfish use cupboards to meet

Tarantulas like desert heat

Underwing moths make poor guests

Vegetable leafminer pests

Wasps hang their nests from features

Xylotomous, wood bore creatures

Yellow jackets sting can repeat

Zoophagous insects eat live meat

James, you are right. I thoroughly enjoyed this, shame it's not eligible to enter it is a wonderful example of an Abecedarian that uses rhyme and a little bit tongue in cheek. I bet it took some researching too with all those bugs etc.

Thank you for sharing with me.

This was very original and a masterful creation of an idea which words invoke for me in addition to poem's literal and primary meaning. Thank you for your review of my new poem, much appreciated.

I hope that a lot of people read this and realize the incredible amount of work that went into writing this alphabet acrostic that rhymes as well. You've pulled off quite a writing feat here with this buggy little gem! And yes, this would make a great addition to a children's book of poetry too. It is written in a way that makes it meaningful on an adult level as well as an elementary level. Well well done, my friend! Clever, witty, and smart.

This one is not only fun for us grown ups, but should be in every book of children's poetry.
