EVERYBODY HURTS

We stood there as the song played
and you looked into my eyes.
“Everybody hurts” you said
“it’s just a fact of life.”

I held your hand so tightly
never wanting to let go;
I didn’t hear the message
I didn’t want to know.

But now in looking back in time
it seems so very clear;
you were telling me goodbye
but I held you with my tears.

And so the game played on a while,
you came and then you left;
leaving me at times alone
and feeling so adrift.

Then came the day you said good-bye,
and my heart fell to the floor,
I thought I’d have to die right there,
for life held nothing more.

I never thought the pain would leave,
but it did and I survived.
But sometimes when I hear that song
there’s an aching deep inside.
