Grandad

Grandad

A Poem by Frankie Ivy
"

I was asked to write a Sestina (google it if you don't know what it is, it's very complicated) for my creative writing group and well this is what i came up with, enjoy.

"

Grandpa.

They’ve told me all the stories about

How you cared so much and how you were

Always the life and soul of the party, that

Time you got drunk, and crashed into the tent and

How your smile could light up the darkest of times

Even when your business was crumbling you still

Remained positive, never let your situation drag you down, you still

Laughed and danced, how you soldiered on, telling the story about

When you were drunk, fell onto a boat and continued to dance, the time

Uncle Wilf was a whale to terrify nana. Somehow you were

The un-perfect, perfect husband, father, uncle, friend and

Granddad, but I never get to experience that.

If you could be here you would, I know that,

You wouldn’t have left if you had the choice but it still

Hurts, because Nana, Mum, Gail, Laura, Hannah, Dad and

Emily they all got to know you, got to know about

How you sometimes lost your temper but you were

Always apologetic. There’s been so many times

I’ve spoken to you, I do it all the time

In fact, I’m just trying to let you know that

I love you, even though you and I have never met, you were,

You are the only person I want to meet, I still

Look at your picture everyday and wonder about

Whether you’re proud of me and

I hope that you’re proud of me and

That you’re proud of who I’ve become and sometimes

When you’re looking down on us from wherever abouts

You may be in heaven, probably the bar I can say that

Much, I hope you miss me and still

Think of the granddaughter you never met. You were

The one and only for Nana, you were

Her one true soul mate, you were devoted and

Dedicated, you cherished her like you should. I know she misses you, she still

Tells me about your first date and the times

You held her so tight and pulled her so close that

She could barely breathe but that is what you were about

Loving people unconditionally, even with tough times you never lost face and

You were the one that everyone turned to, we all miss you still,

When we walk on the St Martie sand

I still think about you, in your heaven bar, I miss you Grandpa, I always will.
