The Price of Poe

The Price of Poe

A Poem by Frieda P
"

Written for the Raven contest...

"

'Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered weak and weary'

I came upon the absurd assumption I might be a poet

although I'd love to write like Plath or Cohen

I'm content to purge my pen in earnest allusions,

that one day my words might be read once again

cheaper than therapy and well worth the effect on my head

then once upon again, someone will read my musings and exclaim,

that first line is a rip off, she plagiarized and copied Poe!

haha, write and write and write Frieda. People here listen, enjoy and look forward to all your poems. Writing is always good therapy whether it's for others or ourselves. You play an important role here at the cafe, you don't need to be like Plath, her end wasn't poetic.

I've noticed that too. Anne Sexton also committed suicide. You're welcome.

I came upon the absurd assumption I might be a poet -- loved this line!

This was very cleverly written, and Poe is a great character to reference in this way. I also liked the references to "Plath and Cohen", my favorite writers. Another masterpiece in my mind.

This is great Frieda and the only thing else I can say is, Why didn't I think of that".

...that one day my words might be read once again... We hope poetry will make us immortal... but of course, that means we will be subjected to judgment even after death, as your last line suggests. :) Great, Frieda!

Write for yourself, first and foremost. Secondly, whether you're concerned about what anyone else thinks of your writing is strictly up to you! Write on, my friend!
