What If...

I have loved and lost
And heard those words before.
I'm afraid a broken heart
Will be broken again once more.

What if I forgot the past
Bad memories gone away,
And could know a love that grows
With every passing day.

What if I began to trust
A man who would never lie,
Knowing this is a love
On which I can rely.

What if I could only know
The feelings held deep inside,
Of a man who is truly honored
To have me by his side.

It's said for each of us
There's one love meant to be,
What if God has planned
For him to be with me.

What if at the moment
When his eyes met mine,
Our two hearts had found
The one love we're meant to find.

What if he had the chance
To show me what love means,
To be there to encourage me
And help me reach my dreams.

No conditions would come with,
The love he'd have for me
Only that I'd always know
It's genuine and true.

Be careful. Becoming dependent on a mate to define yourself is something you should avoid.
However, I do like how at your last stanza you changed the tone of the poem. From what was and what is now.
