Letting Go

Letting Go

A Poem by gentlekindness
"

Poem about a woman healing from narcissistic domestic abuse and her escape to the ocean for healing

"

Wind  swept hair still wet from the ocean waves

Her long legs catching sand

which the breeze is blowing gently onto her skin

She inhales a deep breath of the clean beach air

Smelling the salt and listening to the sounds of the ocean

Still marked with bruises from someone who thought she deserved them

She gently touches her wrist and can tell

That is has begun healing now

From the peace of her freedom and newly found self love

Her breath is easy and free in a way she hardly remembers breathing before

Sensation of solitude as the morning sun rises over the ocean waves

These would be the only waves she would have anymore

The sound of his yelling was becoming like a dream

A shadow of a memory she once had long ago

Getting more distant with each passing wave

Very well described. Letting go is indeed one of the hardest things in life, yet we all have to sometime. As you state in your poem, it can take some time, but eventually it will get better.

One thing I noticed while reading:
- 'Smelling the salt and the listening': I think you should remove 'the' before 'listening'.

Anyway, great work!

Very nice description of letting go and finding a place to overcome and having the will to do so.

Very nicely done. I'm sure many of us just lose ourselves watching and listening to waves reaching the shore. It's perfectly plausible that immersing oneself in the waveband enjoying all their sensory delights would help with the healing you describe. One tiny jarring part - 4th line from the end - should it be 'would be the only waves' (I've added 'the')? If not, I'm curious about why not. But overall I found it really enjoyable and well written. Regards Nigel

I've lived by the ocean my whole life, and I adore it. You have a beautiful way with words and the images I'm left with are soothing. I also like the title. I am somewhat fascinated by the concept of letting go.

Love this. These two lines stick out in my mind as being the essence of what basically is the release from someone's hate overpowering and controlling your every move and thought, to one where realisation occurs and belief that escape is possible and taking your destiny back into your own hands.
People who suffer domestic abuse know it is about more than bruises. Bruises heal, but mental scars run deep. Whatever hell they have been through, that first glimpse of hope can mean the world to them, a world of cruelty continuing or a world of choices and freedom from the bonds of hate.
Beautifully written. Powerful and positive words for those that need them most.

Thank you Annie :)
The ocean is a vast oasis for many. To be on its shore and hear the waves can divert the mind, freeing up the soul. To be free from domestic abuse is to release the chains of a hell that should never have been.

The shore is a good place for contemplation. Its a place for healing. And its a place for ne beginnings if one wishes.

I think lines in the poem could use some revision, but the message is there and its clear. Nice poem.

The poem told a story of hurt and abuse. A search to forget and move on. Thank you for sharing the outstanding poetry. You left a lot for the reader to think about.
