Dear Dadu

Dear Dadu

A Poem by Ms. Twitch
"

Inspired by my father.

"

Carry me gently down the stairs, smelling your sweet cigar when you place my head down
Precious little puppy, how long will you be able to protect me
Before the world and the men in it try to destroy the smile
Try to put out the fire burning in my soul
Taught me to stand on my own, don't need a man
Don't need the friends who won't be there when it all falls down
Don't need to prove to the world what's in my heart
Bleed red and yet judging my skin and hair when we out together
Can't possibly be his little angel, can't believe they mixed races
Not black enough, can't roll my R's enough
Two sides and half and half and in between
but you taught me that one drop is all I need
Taught me about where my uncle used to go, keep his spirit alive in my fist
Don't buckle down to what the world says
Push back when they shove you down, and worst to worst
Grab that two by four and let them see just what you really mean
My name is my legacy
My grandma's story is intertwined in mine
Never to apologize, don't need you to hold my hand
Don't think I'll keep this pace, watch me as I take the stage
Can you keep up with my rhythm and where I'm running off to
Just starting out but give me some time
Find my tempo to each and every rhyme
My scar shows I survived, my twitch is the skip
but don't worry these words won't miss, won't slip.

Your grandma sounds like a wise woman. She would have grown up in a harsher world, lived your life and seen things I can't imagine. And then you walk these same steps and find that the world is still a harsh place, where people judge, laugh when you slip instead of helping to hold you steady and the scars may fade, but never disappear. We have come such a long way in such a short time, but still have a heavy journey ahead before we see true equality. Man, woman, white, black, them and us....just a few of the words and phrases that make that journey longer.
The story is not yet written and your determination and motivation is your ink. Beautiful write Gloria, with an ending waiting for you to complete.

and right back atcha Gloria :
//My name is my legacy
My grandma's story is intertwined in mine//

And what strength that gives to move onwards and upwards //Can you keep up with my rhythm and where I'm running off to
Just starting out but give me some time//

I like the way the poem conveys it message and how wonderful it is in its human detail.
