Open Door

Open Door

A Poem by Paul D. Aronson
"

Here I am trying to channel my inner E.A. Poe.

"
"Open Door"

I thought I had closed the door
But you came back in anyway
Shuffling the feet on the linoleum
Struggling with words to say
After the worst argument
I thought you were gone for good
Guess I should have crossed myself
Or maybe knocked on wood

I was surprised I must admit
By the empty look in your eyes
Your hair like strands of seaweed
Condemning me for my lies
You opened your mouth to speak
I waited for you to explain
But all that came out was a halo
Of flies born of your pain

I screamed and tried to get away
But there was nowhere to hide
From the vengeance of your gaze
My thrice begotten bride
And as your fingers wrapped around
My throat and squeezed my life away
I was wrong to think I had closed the door
To your murder and your grave
