Sticks

Sticks

A Poem by Einstein Noodle

My dog showed me
sticks
Her name is Bella and
she showed three sticks to me
on our walk
sticking
out of the creek water where
she stood slurpingupdrink
Bella is faun colored and
Bull Mastiff'd
wide mouthed frog
one hundred twenty five pounds full
 ..
she showed me
one long, finger thick stick with tails ...and another
eighteen inches ...ends shredded and
one for my mind
One
For
My
Mind
its the process you see
we took them home one day and
i made a bird
she showed me sticks
i made a bird
it's flying now behind my eye
every time we walk along the creek.
The process .....
Do you see?
her sticks?

The poem, the way you’ve written it, feels almost like a spell. It is a kind of magic to find something that could easily go unnoticed and bring it to life. And the way you’ve done it here- taking the three sticks and giving them the flight of the bird- feels kind of otherworldly.

I enjoy the repetition and simplicity of your wording. The syntax adds a somewhat haunting or dream-like note. The call of the creek and the ready ears of the dog becoming attuned to one another.

Animals (and nature at large) have many lessons available if we are open to hearing them. I love the way this poem shows that and also shows the state of being open to imagination and wonder. Wonder is something we never outgrow.

This is lovely work, E. I couldn’t help but see what Margie said about Bella having passed. I’m so sorry to read that. Her memory lives on in great works like this.

Your Bella I know has sadly passed Mr E, but she is still with you in spirit and you will have wonderful memories of all that love and affection she gave you. I love taking Solo, my grandson's dog out for walks. She seems to have become part of the fixtures and fittings, although it wasn't meant that way:) She has certainly become attached to me, but then I feed her and walk her :) Those sticks that Bella showed you, you took and used your creativity to make something special. Even though she is no longer with you, whenever you pass that place again, you will remember your Bella and all the fun you had with her. Our dogs surely have a special relationship with us. My cat is so fickle, will go to anyone at all who will feed her. Loves to give me a little scratch to keep me in check. Solo, can't wait to cuddle up. That's all she wants in life. You know I can't help feeling that dogs have got life sorted, and we have much to learn. Forgive my rambling but that is where your words took me on a dull Saturday morning here. All good wishes across the waters Mr E.

dear E... yes, Bella has sung her Swan Song....
the many walks by waters edge... a gift of sticks... the wings of a bird... to fly home.
A Eulogy of sweet repose... Violins 🎻 play
through Eternity. truly, Pat

This is awesome & I love it! I was loving the literal storytelling of that moment, but I was also having other mind reels going . . . thinking of how it must be that you've now recently lost Bella (SORRY!) . . . thinking of how much love-for-Bella is pouring out of your words here . . . thinking how beloved dogs show us how to put the pieces of our lives back together in ways that are more meaningful than what we'd been doing with our own feeble devices. I could go on! But your creativity really touches me & makes me want to pay better attention to the lessons all around me! (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie
