What the hell happened to the Writer's Cafe?
A Story by Gary A Wilson
|
When I first joined the Writer's Cafe, it was a vibrant website. Sure it had it's share of "contraversial characters" - Addict and Lyttleton among others, but they shook the status quo and [made life interesting.
Then the Baby Rectangles mess left the Cafe in a shambles. Charles and Patrick made the right decision when they asked moderators to help clean things up.
I had to leave for awhile (family and personal reasons) and when I came back - the site changed! My profile was all but wiped out and the forums were gone.
The disasterous decision to eliminate the forums to me was the beginning of the downward cycle this site is in. Let me ask you this - how can a community keep in touch with basically no means to communicate.
To me it seems the majority of us are being punished for the actions of a few immature assholes. I bet somewhere, Baby Rectangles is laughing his ass off, because he accomplished his goal: To disrupt this site, cause mistrust and set in motion the events which led Charles to take this action.
I used to log in and spend time participating in the forums. Now I basically log on, check my email, make sure there's no reported reviews and leave - 5 minutes max. I very rarely review poems and stories (To stay neutral and objective) so honestly, there's very little to keep me interested for a long period of time - no offense, people, there are alot of very talented writers.
I think it's time to petition Charles to reinstate the forums - with changes:
1) put a posting policy in place - no personal, abusive or racial attacks. Have everyone agree to the policy before signing in. If someone violates the policy, the person receives a warning, three warnings and they are suspended from the forums for a month, then placed on a three month probation. Three suspensions and they are banned from the forums and/or have their account closed.
2) Have three or four moderators per forum. They monitor and act ONLY when policy is violated. They should also have the authority to lock a thread that viloates posting protocol or it turns into a verbal free for all.
I'm sure if we put these and a few other changed in place we can bring the Cafe back up to it's former level of excellence.
Remember this people, Charles and Patrick run the site, but it belongs to us!
