Beringia

Beringia

A Poem by Hailey Juliet
"

65.8938° N, 168.3954° W

"
would that i could cross that gaping chasm
on waves or wanton whims
to rest atop a frozen crest
with you
two cold birds perched abreast

to stare back across that vast expanse
and merge coastlines in our memory
reminisce of what was and will
be still
and stay
and wait

follow aurora in perpetuity
that scintillating osculation
hypnotic dance of star and horizon
intimate and wholly uncertain . . .

avast! and stay.
be still.
and wait?
  too late

to reprise that gaping chasm
on a whim or pang of regret,
to indemnify that pound of flesh
as yet
left reluctantly in debt.

Ooooh, this is so perfect! What talent! Your timing, phrasing and word choices are to die for! I love it bringing me back to classic Romantic writers. Also, your writing reminded me of my time in college (northern Minnesota) and how cold and luminescent the frosty landscape was. I thought the merging coastlines was just brilliant. I love your moving metaphor of birds and landscapes to play the drama and love in this relationship. Your piece ebbed and flowed in all the right places.. You have a skillful mastery of written word, and I can't wait to see more!!

Hailey, I love the original use of this "land bridge" in your poem. It brings forth such a spectacular image, further enhanced by your words here.

If I'm being honest, it took me about three times to get the depth of this piece (a statement about my lack of depth, not the quality of your work). You're a gifted writer and a pleasure to read. Please keep writing!
