. . .

something like that fleeting
feeling i felt after that one
time: you were at my back,
holding, caressing, cuddling
or something, and i was fading

like that late afternoon light
we used to absorb on the
front steps of my parent's place
when you would walk me home from
school and we'd talk and talk

too bashful and afraid to say
anything more than 'see you
tomorrow' or 'sleep well'
or something, until that one
time you took my hand

and we just stayed there silent
not knowing what to do or
say, not needing to say
what we were both thinking
or something a little less

romantic. it was like an
hour before my mom poked
her head out the door and
startled you so badly you
jumped up and down the stairs

when you left i stayed on
the steps a while longer
thinking and feeling and wish-
ing for the first time in my
life, that i was you

. . .
