Back to Basics

Back to Basics

A Poem by Richard Dotson, Jr.

Ten months have passed….now’s a good time to make a return.
Going back to basics, a journey to when the fire will once again burn.
Back to my origin, where it all started.
A retrospective of a life which I abruptly departed.
Back to my roots, where I learned my swagger.
A bold individual wit a tongue sharp as a dagger.
Back to the ol’ stomping grounds, where I was created.
Walking on the hallowed domain which kept my rage sedated.
Back to reality, a touchdown on Earth.
Going back in time, shortly after my birth.
I’m going back home. I’ve come to reclaim what’s rightfully mine.
Ten months have we waited for his return…….the suspense sends a chill up my spine.
Mom, your baby boy’s comin’ home to stay.
Guess I’ll move when I’m ready one day.
Dad, it’s time we bury the hatchet.
We need each other, clicking like a six socket ratchet.
Sis, I know we don’t always see at eye level.
Jus know my hand’s extended to keep you from the grip of the Devil.
Jas, you’re my angel. You are the everlasting image of your father.
I love you…and I’m here for you always, without a bother.
Black Rock, the Hata Pimp is coming back to you.
I have 23 years of vivid memories from the adolescent ages to the days of wearing Yankee blue.
It’s time to recapture what was taken from me.
Why I left in the first place remains a mystery.
I’ve finally realized I had a good thing.
I’m finally returned…to reclaim my ring.
I’m going back to the days of high top fades, sweat shorts and Aasics.
Regressing my state of mind to take it back to basics.
