Poet without a Country

Poet without a Country

A Poem by Marie Anzalone
"

when your heart is broken... write some more

"

I am the mirror that shows you

who you are afraid you really were

born to be. I come by boat and

heralded by trumpets at noon;

and stealthily on tiptoe at midnight.

I come to steal the hearts of all

your men; I come to build bridges

between your women and their

deepest desires. I am the wind that

scours dust from the moor after

your worst failure in romance; I

am the smell of fresh cut grain and

oiled machetes in endless adobe

warehouses in the mountains where

the shadows lie. I come to remind

you that there are strangers in your

village; I come because of reasons

that maybe I forgot long ago. I come

because you asked me not to. I am

the cultivation of tilapia in the desert;

I am the sum total of your failings

as warriors of the peace. Sometimes

I come on top; sometimes I come on

the bottom. I have not been able to

come for all the men who tried to

love me; I came for those who used

me sometimes. I am the stillness in

your sorrow; I am the blank pages

in the book you have not yet written.

I am every barrier you ever placed

between you and the powers of

darkness; I am every childhood belief

you never surrendered to cynical

reality. I came because I wanted to.

I come because of who I am not; I

come because of who you have always

been, to me. I am the woman who

would love your sunsets into days;

I am the muse who would trace your

steps with plaster and broken dishes

and a sense of home. I am not who

you think I am; I am every person

you ever wanted a lover to be to you.

I come because someone convinced

me once; the world needed me here.

I came because I forgot you were

waiting for me somewhere else.

I find this poem captivating and inspiring, it shows that we aren't perfect, as poets and as people, at least that's what I see. Well done!
