A Meeting in 1688

A Meeting in 1688

A Poem by Marie Anzalone

In Good Penn's Woods, in Germantown

The Friends did say, "tho they skin be black;

we can no longer set the difference down,

in words no more, whereby say them facts

'Tween those who would steal and rob of men,

and those who simply buy and barter them"

Author's Note

Marie Anzalone
written for the modern day nursery rhyme contest.
This was the meeting that changed the course of American history... a simple Quaker gathering where a few outspoken members agreed to outlaw slavery. It started much earlier than most people think.

Simply beautiful. I told you I was a fan for a reason :) I love the weight behind your words.

I had know that the Quakers were key figures in the fight against slavery, but I did not know that they started on their mission that early. The message still applies today with the economic slavery that we see.

i just took my test on this in history - the quakers were a fascinating group of people :) truly their endeavors go under-appreciated and unknown to the vast majority however :/ thanks for the great read :)
