Off to War

Off to War

A Poem by Heather

Rough green blasts my face;
Pulling back to return its sneer
In a good-bye embrace,
I trace austerity's camouflaged lines
In the uniform like dead bones.

My eye meets the place:
Saluting smug, red-white-blue honors -
My giving up in the race,
My chase unendingly after a pride
In my battle, Unnamed Grey.

Metal roars far away
Closing in on asphalt burnt black
By the heat of midday
To lay mechanically under the crush
Of a glass cell atop tar.

Open and close, snap!
Winding doors swallow whole boots
Of the soldiers that tap,
Tap, tap up steps like my father's towards
Empty leather; in my mind

Rows of seats which chap
Aching thoughts shot dead, the enemy
Invisible on a map;
No clap by hands marking his return -
A victory I have lost.

Strong words used. You wrote with a honest pen. War leave no winners. Winning country left with their youth bury in blood and death. Loser left empty. I liked the use of the language in the poetry. Thank you Heather for sharing the outstanding poetry.
