Dinner Date

Dinner Date

A Poem by Courtney Hough

The waiter stood pen in hand.
"Have you looked at your menu?”
“Not food yet, but your best champagne.
Not a dime is ever wasted on you.”

“It’s been too long my dear.
Haven’t you missed me?”
As I sit across with a dress of white,
“You know I make you free.”

Candles separate us,
With a silky red tablecloth.
Here comes the waiter,
He pops the cork off.

You stand up,
While your glass is filled.
“I’d like to make a toast!”
As the room sat still.

You grab your glass,
“A toast to you my dear.
Celebrate with me,
You’ve been sober for a year!”

Others clap as you sit down,
“No I can’t. I’m alright.”
I picked up my glass,
Moved it to the side, “not tonight.”

“Why not?
Let yourself relax,” you hissed.
I start to push my chair back,
As you grab me by the wrist.

You grab your glass and smash it!
Holding a piece so sharp!
No one seems to hear this,
The harpist still plays her harp.

“You’ve missed me.
You’ve missed us.”
He puts the glass to my scars,
“don’t make a fuss.”

The tablecloth turns to blood,
My dress is stained.
But I pull back from him,
I will refrain!

“I don’t need you anymore!”
I scream at him.
As his beautiful façade fades,
“You won’t win!”

My hand grabs my glass,
And I break it in two!
Stabbing him in the heart,
“You’re not my world, f**k you!”

My depression is enraged,
And wants to take me down!
But I push him away,
And watch him shatter on the ground.

“You don’t own me anymore,
I’m going to take control.
I’m going to live my life,
And take back what you stole.

This i promise you,
you are dead to me.
this is my life now,
you're not even a memory."

The waiter comes back,
looks at our show.
I clear my throat,
"I'll take mine to go."

Challenges and heartache- some grow out of it rise above it but others want us to remain in their misery- anything is possible if you believe in yourself and saying no to your weakness is the first step- congratulations on being an overcommer- not easy but possible- reminded me of many a past day- wonderful deep emotion packed🌹

Your very welcome!
congratulations on being sober. i enjoyed this piece and the imagery it portrayed.

a slight side edit (if it's not too bold of me to point out)

"It's been to long my dear"
should be
"It's been *too* long my dear"

fantastic work otherwise :)
