The Cost

The Cost

A Poem by humbleServant

I'll never again know that sense of care-free,

and it left on a wind of betrayal

as my childhood fell away like a shell

exposing the coarse meat of life

growling, it does not relinquish

it's precious riches that easily

and,

"you can be or do whatever you can dream in this life"

is not always true

and even when it is

the being and doing

will sometimes cost you supremely

and you'd best not go at it like a couch potato deciding to take on an extreme, multi-faceted, all-terrain race

with no training.

The fairy tales of childhood

need to be purposely and carefully evolved

into an optimism that rests on the foundation

of the truth of hard work,

and the idea that rewards are

empty unless they are filled

with what it cost you to earn them.
