Heartland

Heartland

A Poem by Jack Worthington
"

war of course

"

A nation's heart can be understood

When darkness falls and spirits fade
Lost and lonely dreamers return to the woods
While what remains, walk the path of war that evil made.

And when they return to the dusty plain
They find their happy homes now insane
For in those years they were away
Their tender progeny sprang the trap that evil layed.

They sit on porches with nothing left
Their limbs and namesake severed from continuity
Bewildered they read the news which seems to jest
A future once so bright, now filled with ambiguity.

All those lives in piles rust
No more dreamers, no more old men to trust
Broken bodies live with lies
Never having the chance to say goodbye.

And as they sit clouds form on the horizon
Glowing green, the wind sweeping in from the east
The spirits fading cry on
Watching evil prepare its feast.
