It's Midnight (I Miss You Again)

A Poem by Jade Mayhew

It's Midnight (I Miss You Again)

The ring's been on her finger
Since the day she threw the dirt,
Since the day she watched the coffin drop
And felt her first true hurt
But every year on Halloween,
Her pain subsides one day.
The husband that she lost returns
To say all that's left to say

"No matter how much time goes by,
The pain won't break apart
And nothing anyone can say
Will heal my broken heart
And when I'm missing the warmth of the sun on my face,
And the birds all fly south with the wind
I hold you, I kiss you, the goodbye, I love you,
It's midnight... I miss you again."

The two were more like sisters
Than they had ever been like friends.
So when she watched her best friend die,
She thought her life would end.
On her best friend's favorite holiday,
She sits to reminisce
And from the corner of her eye,
Sees the one she'll always miss.

"It's been so long since when you died,
But it still hurts every day.
I still wish I could hold you,
But you had to go away.
And when I'm missing the warmth of the sun on my face
And the birds all fly south with the wind
I see you, I hug you, the goodbye, I love you,
It's midnight... I miss you again."

His family meant everything;
He'd always held them dear.
And the loss of his twin sister
Had caused his heart to sear.
His gun was raised, against his head,
When a motion caught his sight.
His sister, come to comfort him,
This lonely Halloween night.

"You can't let grief control your life.
You're stronger than you know.
I only have a moment more
Until I have to go.
But when you miss the warmth of the sun on your face
And the birds all fly south with the wind,
You'll have me to guide you, you'll whisper 'I love you',
At midnight... you'll miss me again."

He watched with a tear as she floated away
As he picked himself up off the floor.
His eyes held shut tight and his heart open wide
And he felt her around, as before.
And he still missed the warmth of the sun on his face
And the birds all flew south with the wind.
"I saw you, I kissed you, I felt you, I held you.
It's midnight... I miss you again."

Author's Note

Jade Mayhew
I've always had an idea for an alternate universe (AU for you fanfic writers!) wherein ghosts not only exist, but can be visible to nearly anyone. However, they're only able to show themselves on Halloween. I plan on writing an actual story, but until I get a good plot, I'm going to stick with this. I just wanted a general explanation for those who didn't understand the song.
