Each Year We Grow Closer Apart

Each Year We Grow Closer Apart

A Poem by JC

We start out into the
Nostalgic night of our youth,
My old friend and I,
Popping beer cans
To ease the light conversation
Into deeper waters.

Everywhere we look
Memories flood our
Old brains with the
Delightful anarchy
Of our child selves.

My best oldest friend
Lives now in a cage
Of life
Children
The sorrowful complexity
Of a bad sad marriage.

I wish I could
Saw his prison bars
And set his fiery
Soul free.

Instead,
We drink ourselves
Into a stupor,
Parting ways
As the sun rises.

This read is very relatable, some people will grow apart and others you create a strong bond with. I guess it depends on where you both are in life.

I've missed your words. I know exactly these feelings.. And the ending is exactly as it goes. I love the light sense of melancholy

Sharing a drink
Listening to a story
Do people get closer or further apart
Is it a matter of physical distance
Or is it a spiritual issue

As growth takes lead
Some peope often can only share a couple of drinks and a couple of stories

I felt the sadness here but also felt your yearning to not let go of a dear friend

thats quite beautiful

sad but beautiful...

great read

Such a sadness rippling through this fine poem.Your phrasing says just enough but clearly. Why does life do that to people, make them look back, see the flaws, shrug maybe then cheer up, knowing things can't always change

Guess beer to men is like candy for women.. sooths the right places until.. next time. You and your friend are lucky to have each other..

I try.. I try.. I try.. ten characters?
You express well how life does not often turn out the way we would like. You remind us that we have memories to share. But it is good to have a shared friendship and then 'As the sun rises' so do future possibilities. Thank you for this thoughtful poem.
