Fly

Fly

A Poem by Jess Rose

The Girl
She wants to be a bird when she grows up
How cool would it be
To see what's above the clouds?
To float on the breeze?
To fly?

But they tell her that's impractical.
A girl cannot become a bird. A girl cannot fly.

For halloween, she dresses as a fairy
Cardboard wings taped to her back.
The other kids laugh
And tell her she's too fat
And her stubby wings will never get her off the ground
A girl cannot fly

But she can fly
Airplanes are always an option, aren't they?

Yeah, right. They tell her
She's too dumb to be a pilot
And too ugly to be a flight attendant
Your dreams are stupid
Just give up already.

Finally she does
She climbs very high where she can see the clouds one last time
She knows she cannot fly.
The world has made this very clear.
But that's kind of the point this time
