the night of unbelonging

the night of unbelonging

A Poem by jeRRy.whaLLey

before the fire
the crescent moon
         fell into the ocean

to the windy howls of night --
  a hopeless lantern
                   wandering

           longitudinally bound -
waned with portentous gravity --
piercing bells tormented

                  our hapless faces
to homeless unbelonging --
                 a slow movement

of the reaching sea
with black smoke billowing -
          blotting out the sky

where once we dreamt --

Maybe because of the picture, I thought of this as mourning things and dreams lost in a fire. It's beautifully written and the phrases were elegant. I've never experienced losing my home in a fire, never have quite grasped how the 'piercing bells' would 'torment' or the feeling of 'homeless unbelonging'. I think you've captured it.
