All Her Firsts

All Her Firsts

A Poem by Jennifer

She gently brushed her cheek as she looked into her big blue eyes,

Not knowing that this would be the last time she would see her new baby alive

Unaware that she would miss out on all the baby's firsts,

First laugh, smile, and steps,

First Christmas, Birthday, and Halloween,

No 4 a.m bottle feedings, late night diaper changes, or rocking her to sleep

No planning surprises, chasing monsters from under the bed, or hunting for tiny lost socks

She will blame herself for months

Possibly years,

Then, she'll finally come to realize,

That is wasn't her fault.

This is a lovely and haunting piece expressing the woes a mother goes through when losing a child. It makes the read think and appreciate all the firsts in their own lives. Well done!
