History Lesson

History Lesson

A Poem by J. K. Beach

In an instant

things changed

                        when

an inner space shuttle explosion

            of the heart

followed

a warm sunny Dallas picnic day

            shot to hell

and

            you dropping a love bomb

            on my Hiroshima mushroom

            clouded head

I should have seen

signs on our Route 66 love affair

and ditched you at the Esso filling station

where your beautiful smile

filled me up with high-octane fuels

I would later find out were lies

                        and

dirt in the engine of my

            late 20th Century heart

Time stopped when

I saw you with another model

whose shiny chrome and fins

were older but

flashier by far than the

fifth hand Pinto

that had gotten us there

and

            a paparazzi pursued princess

crashing into the world’s collective heart

followed

            a Memphis motel movement

            deferred dream

                        and

            you sneaking up on my

pearl harbor life dropping

promises on my heart’s peaceful waters

In an instant

things changed

                        and

Our history exploded into big chunks of nothing

This was a terrific write JK.

Matters of broken hearts delivered through excellent metaphors and allusions keep the reader griped to the edge of the seat till the last verse.

I am sorry that this is history, hopefully now you are traveling through air of security and love.

Excellent work my friend!

Soooo, a jealous car? Am I reading that right?

I like the hop, skip and jumping through time thing though, very cool.

Structure seems a little sloppy, can't really say anything though. Maybe you just kinda bang out poetry like I do and for all intensive purposes, I think it's really the best way to write poetry.

But do we ever learn the lesson? I think not and painful as it sometimes is, our search is unceasing.

A unique poem.

Thank you, Beccy for your thoughts... it is a hard lesson to learn.
Love is definitely headed towards a cliff here. Great thing about history is we learn from it so it doesn't repeat.

Missed your wit, girl!
Wow, Jeff! This is quite terrific... I love the flow, the imagery alluding to historical events or landmarks, etc.: Hiroshima/Pearl Harbour, and "I should have seen/ signs on our Route 66 love affair" ....
I love the beginning lines that by itself express a clear division between the present and the past, a moment of history:
"In an instant
things changed..."

"when/ an inner space shuttle explosion/ of the heart/ followed/ a warm sunny Dallas picnic day/ shot to hell/ and/ you dropping a love bomb/ on my Hiroshima mushroom/ clouded head"
Quite the image, I love how you use the qualities associated with the words to describe something dissimilar or unconventional from these.
"where your beautiful smile/ filled me up with high-octane fuels/ I would later find out were lies/ and/ dirt in the engine of my/ late 20th Century heart" This bit is great!

Thank you for sharing!

You're welcome. :)
Wow! This is the best poem that I have ever read! The style is so beautiful and the narration was excellent!
I love how you combine words like ,Dallas pinic day, or hiroshima mushroom. Though I might say, it's hard to understand, but the poem stands out beautifully.
Great poem.
