Appalachian Suite

Appalachian Suite

A Poem by J. K. Beach

Prelude: Mountain Song

Ghosts, we rarely haunt

the rising mountains

first home among many hollow hills

yet they stand before us in season

in mind’s absent eye

seen just as they were

when two boys scaled them

and turned every dark stone

on every canted path

that they could climb

singing their mountain song--

I see them now in their...

Appalachian Rebirth

Eager spring kissed slopes

midst winter’s silvery trunks

your prodigal patches of green--

trillium, bloodroot, and watercress--

portents of nature’s

resplendent rebirth

are welcome now

after long winter’s bitter grip--

then I feel their...

Appalachian Breeze

Sensuous summer laden land

your temperate heights shelter

secrets beneath leaf heavy boughs

as blue ridge spines bask in

sun’s gentle incandescence

and seasons soft breeze caresses

verdant meadowed cheeks

and runs up cool dark hollows’ skirts--

then I smell their...

Appalachian Harvest

Autumn morning chill kissed land

your gravid nature gives birth to

harvests in the evening heat

while season’s gifts bounce

down dusty market roads trailed

by faded blackberry perfume--

Spent life given to cold breath’s

promise of a distant new year--

then I witness their...

Appalachian Coronation

Stark winter ridden land,

that men have carved

homes from your harshness

need not be questioned

on those bright-sightful days

when white shouldered majesties

bear their sunsets

like a host citrine crowned--

I see them again in their...

Appalachian Rebirth

Eager spring kissed slopes...

A lovely string of separate and yet cohesive pieces that truly take us on a visual and emotional journey. I can visualize every bit of the land - the dusty roads, the starkness, the sunsets, and the "eager spring kissed slopes". You have brought something to life here.

vey interesting format, and the content makes reading a pleasure. I think it must have been somewhere you loved a lot. And I am glad it ends with 'eager spring kissed slopes.'

This is interesting. The different sections seem to have their own mood.

... as each season has it's mood ... thanks for reading!
i read your comment to jacob ... how very fortunate for you to have grown in those hills .. and such a grand time revisiting them ... they have haunted me all my life ;) even the tall jagged teeth of the Rockies (for me) do not compare ... i enjoyed your poem and the walk through the seasons there ... how can one not always want to go back ... i think your poem is loaded with fine use of language, personifications and sensory emotions .. each verse gives me a favorite line .. nice one .. love those mountains!

This resounds with brilliance, from one verse to another. Your descriptive nature reads as compelling here as the mountatins in their stoic majestic awe!

Bravo, my friend!

My best,
Kelly
