Alone

Alone

A Poem by Audrey Bruckner

Hello mommy

is that you?

behind the monster mask

and the persona brand new

can you tell its me

through your glassy stare

or are you too drunk to even care

I know you don't want me

cause you love the bottle more

but i desperately need money

to go to the store

cause little sister is crying

tummy trembling for food

she has gone hungry longer

than anyone should

her complexion is pale

and her frame is unhealthy

another day without food

could prove to be deadly

but just as i htought

you turn your back

take a long sip from the bottle

and pull a cigarette from the pack

no little sister!

don't close your eyes

but its too late

she exhales and dies

don't blame me mommy

cause little sister went to heaven

after all

i am just eleven

could this be a dream?

a film in my head?

and tomorrow i will wake

warm in my bed

with a normal mom

that is daddy's wife

and  a little sister

that is so full of life

i don't think so

cause this is my place

with my drunken mother

and my life going to waste

this is such a lonely, tragic poem. perfect choice of point of view, the innocence losing to the evils of worldly influence, and sadly, to the hands of those people who are supposed to be the ones who will take care of them. very nice work!
