More than BirdsA Poem by Josie E. Cook M. A.Nature~ so entertaining...daily!More than Birds
The sprinklers are running Because of the hot sweaty air All the tiny birds are playing in the crystal droplets Warblers, kinglets, chickadees, and Some of those gnatcatchers. The early hours are the magical time of my day To catch this winged dancing in the water flowing In the air before it kisses the blades of green.
By my kitchen windows, Watching with my coffee cup in hand And my book in my lap, Becoming a bird watcher that is what I am Along with many colorful butterflies, buzzing bees, And swarming wasps visiting the scene As the birds do their daily bathing In the streaming drops from the sprinklers Turning in the lawns across from me.
I'm simply besotted with these birds Putting on the Ritz and becoming spotted With the liquid moisture Before my eyes, However, the are no condors present To give me a glimpse of their wings spread Widely over our city or country. Only one hawk that often dives towards The squirrels munching on my neighbor's deck, Her pretty sunflowers become their meal. As their large pollen coated petals scatter, and land in the surrounding bushes Of azalea It is a primitive still life only Ever so touching because of the sadness of stolen seeds As the yellow finches return to find the sunflowers already Destroyed and littering the pink blooms swaying In the calm winds. I wait for my next morning to come And the show to begin with this same cast Of characters entertaining me with their daily Routine. J. E. Cook ©2017 © 2017 Josie E. Cook M. A.Author's Note
