Cycle Transformations

Cycle Transformations

Seasons change and so do people sometimes...

Cycle Transformations

Summer will blend into autumn soon

As yellow warblers call to each other

And the flocks of birds

Fly over the salt marshes

With sandpipers poking holes into

The mudflats along the moving shores

And the thick forests show off colors

Of fiery red from the sumac

With wild grapes growing around them

In hues of purple

The evenings grow colder and shorter,

Today, I watch many ships pass through the morning

Frosted windows

Some with three masts

On course

To parts unknown to me

With their tattered netting hanging and blowing

A starboard and a trap door

To the hold below

Their planked floors moist from the salt waters,

I walk to my side sundeck

Out of the warm kitchen

The winds send pulses of brine

To my nose

It takes away my melancholy feelings

As the frogs call to each other

Flocks of birds fly over me

As the sky gains some light

All are wanting more rain

To come soon

I turn to view my daughter peeking

Down at me from an upstairs window

That I know is from the hall

She must be on her way to join me

Here as the morning starts its day

Meadowlarks descend to the shores

And mockingbirds fill the air with song

The sky turns from purple to light gray

Near the waterline

As my daughter fills the hammock

With her still sleepy form

My breath comes out in a fog

After sipping my hot blackberry tea

My hand curls around my empty cup,

I'm dreaming about being in the sea

During the summertime,

Warm yellows fill the sky

And the dull gray is gone

Pale white clouds string together

Above the moving waves edged in froth

The water arrives in foam and bubbles

As an egret bobs among the sharp rocks

Then it makes a slow flight for the island

Beyond the marshes

Time to start breakfast for both of us

I open the double doors and go back inside

The sharp salt smell follows me

As the sea is rising under the sun's warm rays. ---J. E. Cook ©2017

The changing of the seasons helps us admire the beauty of change. Your poem describes how change is natural and creatures inherently live according to the seasons. It makes me realize that these natural patterns influence our thoughts and actions.

Great reflection on the cycles in our life!
