Chapter 40

Chapter 40

A Chapter by Jemma Packman

Indigo stands at the front door of Sabrinas house. She takes a deep breath before knocking on the door. After a few seconds, the door is opened by a young boy. The boy says “Hello.”
Indigo says “Hi.”
The boy holds out his hand. “Im Ethan.”
Indigo takes Ethans hand and shakes it. “Im Indigo.”
“Youre not purple. Youre pretty.”
“Thank you. My name is Indigo.”
“Do I know you?”
Before Indigo can answer, Summer comes towards the door and says “Ethan, what have you been told about answering the door?”
“But, Mommy, it was a pretty lady. And you always tell me not to keep pretty ladies waiting.”
Summer looks up at Indigo. “Indi? What are you doing here?”
Indigo holds up Summers phone and says “Returning your phone.”
“Oh. Thanks. Come in.”
Indigo steps inside and Ethan closes the door behind her. “Im sorry for just showing up. I would have called but, you know.”
Indigo hands Summer her phone. Summer takes it. “Its fine.”
Ethan says “Mommy, is Indigo staying for dinner?”
“I dont know. Why dont you ask her?”
Ethan turns to Indigo. “Would you like to stay for dinner?”
Indigo says “I dont know if I should.”
“Why not?”
I did turn up unannounced.”
“But youre here now and I asked. Please? Im helping Grams make it.”
“May I ask what it is?”
“Spaghetti.”
“Thats my favourite.”
“Then you have to stay. Ill tell Grams.”
Ethan heads to the kitchen. “Hes adorable.”
Summer says “Thats one word for him. Do we need to talk about this?”
“We dont have to. I should go. Im intruding.”
“No youre not, and you wouldnt want to upset Ethan would you?”
“Thats low.”
“Fine. Indigo, will you please stay and have dinner with me and my family?”
“Ok, but only because your mom will hunt me down if I dont.”
From the kitchen, Sabrina shouts “Girls, dinners ready.”
“Be right there.” Summer shouts back before turning to Indigo. “How does she still make me feel like a child sometimes?”
Indigo says “Maybe its a mom thing. Youll know in about twenty years.”
Summer laughs. Ethan comes out of the kitchen, walks over to Indigo, holds her hands, looks at Summer and says “Mommy, Grams said if you dont get in the kitchen now youre grounded and that I should bring Indigo so you dont try any funny stuff with her.”
Summer looks at Ethan, shocked, then storms towards the kitchen, shouting “Mother!”
Ethan looks at Indigo. “Come on. Grams might get mad but dont worry because Ill protect you.”
Indigo says “Thank you.”
Ethan pulls Indigo to the kitchen.
