ALONE--FOR CONTEST.

ALONE--FOR CONTEST.

A Story by Julie Grenness
"

All alone, a lone wolf, a reticent introvert.

"

ALONE.

Alone, the lone wolf observer, spent her reticent hours in introspection and abstract thought. An innate introvert, born to hermit-like parents, sibling of a withdrawn sorority, she got on with her life, like everyone else. The observer found her friends in literature, constantly reading and learning. She was grey-haired, in her early sixties, a product of her background and environment, the times and experiences of her lifespan. She was a lone wolf.

The observer studied her beautiful Earth, the planet. Lone wolf pondered on the futility of genocide museums, no one now left to see them. She read daily of the news of global schisms over isms. Slavery, misogyny, bigotry, such wasted hostilities.

The observer, lone wolf, heard an old song from the fifties/sixties. Clyde McPhadder, "What am I living for?" The loner mused, then composed her own  version, a love letter to the human race.

"What are we fighting for?

Look at the sparkling sea,

So beautiful,

What are we fighting for?

Look at the snow-clad alps,

So pristine.

What are we fighting for?

Look at the desert dawn,

So golden warm,

What are we fighting for?

Look at the valleys and lakes,

So serene and calm,

What are we fighting for?

Look at the tiny ant,

So perfectly small,

What are we fighting for?

Look at the human form,

So miraculous

What are we fighting for?

Look at the clouds,

So fluff and moist,

What are we fighting for?

Look at the Planet Earth,

So bountiful,

What are we fighting for?

Look at the blazing stars,

So heavenly,

What are we fighting for?

Look at the Universe,

So infinitely large,

What are we fighting for?

What are we fighting for?

The observer considered her love letter to the human race. No one listened. Lone wolf, all alone in the world,

perused the lemmings, daily phobias and hatreds forming. The observer, lone wolf, thought she could proclaim a way through the wilderness, to achieve an impossible dream. On lone voice called out, wrote out, a message to the lemmings, to teach Peace and tolerance to all the children of the lonely planet. In a century's time, lone wolf wrote that it would be worth making a difference to the future of the humanoids, currently hell bound.

The observer gazed at the stars in the heavens above, her informal church. "Is there anybody out there? Is this all there is?" The questions resounded in her sole neuron. The rare Planet Earth, so magnificent, so blessed with such

rare sapient life-the humans. The observer, the lone wolf, mused on history, mankind's capabilities to damage each other, all the habitats on Earth, the only planet in the known Universe with any life forms. The human race, all alone in the Universe, always seeking a path to star trekking.

"Where are all the aliens?" Billions of people, teeming, in the race, each one waking up alone in some way, individual and unique. Yes, a unique rare jewel-like Earth, journeying through silent space, alone. The intelligent, sapient humans, mankind, humanity, lemmings. All eventually waking up in their own space, alone.

Lone wolf, the observer, wrote and pondered, all alone in the world. The classic question burning in her brain:

Is it scarier to be all alone, or not alone?"
