Parting

Parting

A Poem by Julia Ledo

Whoever said parting is such sweet sorrow
Must have never felt the sorrow I felt
Leaving you.
What idiot believes the ache is sweet?
The throbbing ache of a heart in pain
How sweet
Who thinks that desperate hug leaves a sugary taste on your tongue?
Describing it almost sounds so,
But it's not.
Feeling as though your eyes may never meet
The stars in the sky never realigned
Fingers no longer intertwine
Arms wrapped around shoulders, waists, and necks,
Sobs racking your body like bullet wounds
But oh so honey sweet.
The rivers and lakes formed from your eyes
Bridges under construction for years
Before you finally get over it.
But still every time you think about it
Your throat closes up
Like the hand on your arm that had gripped so tightly
Is the hand inside you around your throat,
Making it impossible to catch your breath
How sickly
honey
sugar
sweet.
