Shepherds Abiding

Shepherds Abiding

A Poem by Doug Blair
"

Out of the everyday comes the Lord

"
Simply at our post

With the sheep and all

And a small fire fixed

To withstand night’s chill

And a tale or two

As we could not sleep

Neath a sparkling sky

On a quiet hill.

And so much was dark

In that time of strife

What with Roman might

Pressing hard our land

Yet a moment’s change

Turned the skies aglow

With a wondrous light

With an angels’ band.

And we mustn’t fear

Said the one who led

As he brought great news

For us weary poor

Down in Bethlehem

Our deliverance comes

As a Babe arrives

Through a lowly door.

Simply at our post

When the world was changed

Then a hurried trek

To a rustic stall

And a Mother’s smile

O’er the Child of hope

And a liberty

Meant for one and all.
