Written While Listening to You Breathe

I.

I feel so privileged to be the one

Who gets to listen to you breathe

I love your worldview, your outlook on life

That makes itself known behind every sigh

Those sighs that keep time with the beating of my heart.

The sweetness and care behind every breath

Every breath a song completely your own

I want to protect you from everything:

The depth of what I feel for you

Perpetually caught in the morning after

If only I could express us in words
I would be making millions

Though epiphanies soft as shuttered eyes

Fizzle away with the light of day

Perhaps everyone is more themselves in the dark.

Serenity, behind your sighs,

Holds holy thoughts and simple words

Like love, my thoughts don't make much sense

Except when something overheard

Like truth the rise and fall of life

I count the freckles on your face

To trace your legs with skin like silk

Leaves love and life alone, amazed.

In starting hearts you shine with skill

In soporific somnolence

I sing you something soft and smile

A smile that's faded neversince.

This love, endocytosed and strong

Has coevolved with who I am

So, like the mitochondrion,

One cannot tell where it begins

Except exploding touch and kiss

No language can make light of it

No poetry could capture all

Transcription and translation can't

But sometimes when I touch your sound

My mind extends beyond its reach

With winding words entwined like threads,

I send the world a tiny piece.

I read the title, and instantly I knew i would like the poem, but when I read on... i was reassured. The way your words paint the most lovely private picture of those late night-early morning moments where watching your lover's breathing is the most pivital and wonderful part of your day. I adore this.

Great job.
