Soda Crackers

Soda Crackers

A Poem by Kathy Van Kurin
"

delightful experience with fascinating birds as they come to feast on soda crackers.

"
Soda Crackers

Shared morsels at wood's edge,
yes I have!
crispy bits of soda crackers.

Spotted towhee, pine chipmunk,
 little mouse-

come to visit for their own
little share and nibble.

They enter without hesitation
for this table laid out.

Here and gone but word gets out.

The feast is readily attended
 by others like them,

nothing lost.

Neither a word spoken nor a
 gripe displayed,

Simply consumed
 at lightning speed.

I love your poem, but I would not feed wildlife the empty crap we humans invented. Soda crackers? I wouldn't feed my dog soda crackers! But aside from my culinary snobbishness, I find it amazing how (living in the wilderness as I do) the word gets around when there is something for the birds to eat around here! The birds peck my garden to pieces & they get enuf of my food, so I don't feel any obligation to feed the greedy little suckers any more than they already grab! *wink! wink!* Happy Easter! (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie

Nice write and one I experience daily. Feeders are out in front and birds of all types feed. In the back deer and turkey feast on grain. Lots of animals in a large space. Valentine

There is such a peace in watching birds and other little creatures feast. They are happy in this moment, the lingering taste of cracker treats laid out for them. This made me smile so much. Still trying to learn to live fully in every single sweet breath.

This reminds me of someone I used to know who fed her garden visitors every morning without fail, as she loved to sit back and drink her coffee, as breakfast was served. I was on the phone to her once when she was doing just that and she exploded into a fit of giggles, as the hummingbirds, hummed their thanks unexpectedly close to her head. I loved the fact that she laughed instead of shrieked and freaked out, like I would most likely have done. Your soda crackers reminded me of that beautiful moment, so I thank you for that. :)

I just envy you because here in London we do have some wildlife but only squirrels and birds.I love to read about such things s it would be my dream to do what you did.I do remember giving ginger biscuits to sheep in Yorkshire. My husband was swimming in a river and a lot of tame sheep chased me until I fed them. What a happy memory I got from your poe,

Hunger is universal and yet feeding removes the people-fear and threatens domestication to naturalist eyes.
...And when it's people - the generosity is seldom without thought or strings or time limits... or even perceived angers toward BOTH sides - giver and receiver.

As a poem - there is a sense of innocence and wonder.
