Dwelling among us

Dwelling among us

A Poem by Kathy Van Kurin

Dwelling among us

They dwell among us quietly, blending in.

Are they homeless?

No. They live within their own Person houses.

.Be aware their Complex layers;

Delightfully they will draw you in.

Intricate stories, they are living novels.

Survival a daily ritual, they hunt and gather.

 Yes we must share.

Weathering cold, wind, rain they seek safety and solace.

We can be part of their deep shelter.

Is connection with the nest-less threatening?

They are part of the scene, the public setting but too human.

.Do we see ourselves in their souls, our response?

Nurture with nourishment.

Smile with bottled water. Listen.

People in all walks of life suffer and need help one way or another. Some with comfort, some with material assistance and others with guidance. The legitimate homeless or refugees are victims of many reasons. We need to be compassionate even if they are less fortunate or down on their chances. A very complex subject and heart-wrenching...:)................
An excellent take on this subject.

Our "Person houses" can become quite isolating; easy falling prey to "social agoraphobia."
Christ showed us the way; we must love our neighbors as ourselves. It's not the least bit complicated.
Let us, then--with joyful hearts--be about The Father's business.
An eloquent and elegant reminder, Kathy!

It is all too easy to judge, or think the worst... "drug addict; shiftless; lazy" but we don't know the life history of someone on the street. Some just have wretched luck, and it could happen to any one of us. We should spare a thought, and give a helping hand. Governments should do MUCH more! A thought-provoking write!

Best wishes from one person house to another!
I love this! I find myself drawn to the homeless in my area. I am always stopping to talk, offer a hug, or something they need! Many don't understand my heart about them. I see people just like me. This poem touched my heart because it shows the unity of people, the humanity. Too many want to judge and point fingers and blame, when if we all could just see a common ground maybe we could learn to respect and love each other right where we are at.
A delicate subject well addressed! Well done!

It's too bad more people don't realise that we all 'dwell among us'. A writer questions what he sees. What story lies behind that sad countenance? How did they get here? What goes on in their mind? How is it I know so few of these people? A good write, Kathy.

Very heart felt piece. When I pass them on the street, I always feel sadness, and wonder what happened to them. I used to see this lady maybe in her 70's living in the park close to me, it made me think of my grandmother and how loved and taken care of she was. Some things are unacceptable in this day an age! Great poem in every way

It is good to recognise these less fortunate people amongst us.
They are victims of circumstances and we need to understand them.

It is great that you have taken the time to acknowledge the 'invisible' ones amongst us. I think it is good that you have not been too specific and we can recognise our own less fortunate neighbours.
It is good to see poetry having a social voice.
