Winds Chase

Winds Chase

A Poem by Kathy Van Kurin
"

Clues within nature's life. We anticipate Springs warmth, light and beauty.

"

Winds Chase

Winds chase through pewter skies, sculpted within leaden grey.

 Billowy formations melt together and keep racing.

Carried to earth; the gusts come a- swirling-

like a spinning wheel,

 pushing and pushing still.

Trees sway in a glorious waltz;

 branches and limbs brushing together,

whilst tiniest new leaves rustle

 and twirl in breezes swirl.

Heavens water deluge, shouts in power-

 possessing and enclosing all it finds,

then departs.

 The wood grove stands tall, slim and still

 but

 for the damp; drip, dripping all around.

My soul lifts in joy

 as a fresh new wind comes a riding,

 trading grey firmament pin wheels above,

with one of Cerulean blue and creamy cloud softness.

Song birds timidly come out of hiding

from their blackberry hedge fortress;

 twinkling into my heart.

 In loveliness they sing and twitter,

 splash and play,

 through every mud puddle.

  Soon to form families;

 fly, swoop and visit with one another

 in every vine and tree limb perch.

Yes,

Delightful little feathered ones are here!

Red wing blackbird,

 spotted and crimson eyed towhee,

- cowbird and sparrow,

are each a feathered wonder!

-They peck the dampening and swelling earth

-for black sunflower seeds

 cast by thoughtful hands.

 Last but not least;

colorful cuties,

Red and purple finch steal the show!

Cold dim days are fading

 into hope's

nurturing time, refreshing.

Oh, come warmth and sunshine brightness!

Spur us on to be, move and strive

 for new dreams and vitality.

These precious days

 of pre-spring transition

point forward.

 March gales

wave your flag signal of

clues given to the much awaited spring!

A very well written piece.....

Your poems are always descriptive of a living canvas and this one is no different. Your vocabulary and word choice combine with lush visual imagery to put the reader in that very environment; marvelling along side you as the final gusts of winter give way to the coming of Spring.

A very visual, well written poem. Nice work.

When poetry contains this level of thoughtfulness and beauty, it really transforms into the mind of the reader. Your words are sheer wonders for the reader because of their gravity and ability of creating such magnificent imageries. Birds, winds, sky, and nature capturing the whole theme of this beautiful poem. Great to be back at the café and read something amazing from you Kathy... God bless you...

So -- I have a soft spot for birds in poetry. Therefore, I enjoyed the inclusion of birds in this poem!

I quite like the structure, and what I would call the "inclusive voice" -- that reminds me of the Americanist tradition that recalls Emerson, Whitman, Crane... Bravo.

Well done, Kathy. You set the scene perfectly. We have snow at the moment, but it has been an 'easy' winter this year. Still, the spring rains will be welcomed, as will the twittering of birds. Good write.

There are so many layers here, so wish I could soak beneath each and every one! Beautiful: 'The wood grove stands tall, slim and still ~ but for the damp, drip, dripping all around.' Tis almost as if time weeps before moving on.

Your language is so vivid in this poem, Kathy, tis as if your eyes have eaten your surroundings and you're reflecting everything seen! Delightful description about feathered creatures!

Paints a vivid image of spring anticipation and its beginning. Your choice of words is very soft and sort of hailing the topic, completely making use of its purpose. So many colors and natural images in there, boundless and almost overwhelming.

You're welcome.
"pewter skies sculpted within leaden grey." ..brilliant!! says it all says i! ..lived most of my life in SD and i know too well those sculpting artists .. and you paint the glories and wonderment of those deceiving "nice" days ..that can even temp blossoms from the fruit trees and tulips from the ground .. only to be blasted a few more weeks .. or even more than a month ... grrrrrrrrrrrrr! one needs to protect those bird songs in the mind and heart to get through to ... FINALLY ... Spring!! well said my friend! loved the experience of reading this
