the color of hunger

the color of hunger

A Poem by mikayla baldwin
"

a hue of desperation

"
the color of hunger, a hue of desperation
hunger is grey
as she draws hearts and initial on her assignments
hoping and praying one day
he'll begin to notice her

hunger is brown
the only thing she had today was a
cup of coffee and a cigarette

hunger is yellow
it's the stars she sees
when her headaches are too much to bear
she tells herself "it'll be worth it"

hunger is a dark blue
it's the rivers that run vividly along her
body today because she has to fit in that dress tomorrow
how else would she be beautiful

hunger is pale
when the rivers cant flow anymore
because they've created a huge puddle
on her bathroom floor

hunger is clear
it's the tears that roll down
her mother's face at the graveyard
wondering where she went wrong

hunger is black
evil, it can follow someone around all day
no matter how you squint you wouldn't see
that hunger is just a shadow, constantly eating at me.

wow, I just realized every color of the hunger represents like a feeling if I'm correct, so she tries to lose weight so she can be noticed by the one she likes. but her doing that to herself brought herself to an end. and "Hunger is black" was like an evil person telling her what he wanted her to think and see what she looks like and put her in so much pain. Just an outstanding poem.

Our perception of self-image is a real issue to live with... and oh how the mirrors lie and lie...

the pain is almost palpable, especially with yellow. i like the color association in relation to the introductory first line. good work!

This is a very powerful piece. Your symbolism is incredible here, with all the colors you use. You have a lot of emotion here too, but not the typical kind. It's a very detached emotion, aloof almost, but it really adds to the voice of the poem, making it vague and easier to relate to. I really enjoyed this. You're a very talented poet!
