Ode to Scarlett

Ode to Scarlett

A Poem by Kiera Scanlon

You were lying in my arms,
As I endeavoured to say goodbye,
“It’s for the best”, they said,
Well, we all knew it was a lie.

They said, you wouldn't feel pain again,
But I wanted you to stay.
Your lack of life had more impact,
Than a hundred million men.

I know you could not see me,
but I held you all the same,
My hands were cold, my face was numb,
I couldn't cry, the tears wouldn't come.

How do you mourn the death of one,
Whose life had barely just begun?

I thought you were just sleeping,
To energize for the day,
But baby, you were sleeping so heavy,
You just wouldn't wake!

I feel so guilty for your death,
But I know not what I could have done,
Should I have watched you take every breath,
My precious little one?

You fought for every breath you took,
Reluctant to let go,
A mighty fight,
A battle,
Lost to a pernicious foe.
A last embrace consoled the soul,
As malevolent forces took their toll.

Why is time still passing?
When I feel it should have ceased.
Why are people still living?

While my baby doesn't even get to breathe?

this is a tragedy that begs the question "Why?" ... the weight of trying to make some kind of sense out of this heavy weight is simply not possible .. it is not "fair" ... the rhyme and reason for such things is beyond our human experience but human "faith" can offer solace without understanding, peace without reasons ... if this is about your loss, Kiera, I hope you have found comfort and strength to continue to walk through this very hard time ... I am a nurse in Pediatric Intensive Care and though children recover from tremendous insult some do not .. I feel your sorrow; you do not walk alone in this .. :(

Such a sad poem, I could really feel the emotions in this beautiful piece. No mother, father or sibling should ever have to go through this.

A very sad poem. You open the door to sadness we will never understand. To lose a child is something no person will ever overcome. The emotions in the poem were deep and hard. I like the many questions asked in the poem. Thank you for sharing the powerful poetry.

Wow. This was beautiful and written straight from your heart. I believe that there is a special place in heaven for children who die. Good job with this. :)
