She Dances In My Mind

A Poem by Mike Carson
"
Following my wife's death a few months ago, I found myself doing some strange things. One of them was hanging out in strip clubs...just another form of escape...but I carry her with me everywhere...
"

I was younger once

And foolish enough to think

I had something…

Something valuable in my words

But that was days ago

Before I lost it all

Once in a lifetime

Is it enough?

Drifting through this world

Of lonely people

And love left cold

With so many dead or dying

I seek solace where I can

Dancers

Long silky hair flowing

Legs that won’t stop

I am weak and only human

Just a man

In search of his soul

Each step taking me closer perhaps

To the edge

In a cage above the floor

She dances in my mind

Swirling in time to the beat

Of my heart

Her eyes sparkled

Every time she recalled

Dancing in Detroit

In the summertime

In the ‘70s

A lifetime before we met

I was once foolish enough

To think I had nothing
