A Teen in Mumbai

A Teen in Mumbai

A Poem by kmarie596
"

Story of a slumdweller teen, taking care of her family.

"

As I awake every morning
not a smile on my face,
Not a sparkle in my eye
My emotions out of place.

‘Mother where are you?’
The cries the morning brings,

Too, young too innocent, to answer I cannot
Thriving, the sad silence sings.

The slums, the slums

Make shift houses tower high,
Mocking that I cannot escape
The only option, though, to die.

But now I have a destiny in life,
To rid the fear of loved ones, to rid of the strife,
The task to take care of my family,
No time, no money, no reward for me.

But one day my time will come,
A young age, no need to ask ‘why?’,
No food, disease risk, no water, no life
But until that day, I only live to die.
