"RETREAT & SURENDER"

"RETREAT & SURENDER"

A Poem by Kenny L. Mitchell

“RETREAT & SURRENDER”

There is an abject silence

That fills the empty room

Falling like shards of glass

From a red tinted ceiling

The forgot psalms I’ve sung

Spring from my fevered brow

The distant echo of youth

Playing games within my mind

What of all the people

I used to know as a boy

Why have they fallen

To the cruel pace of time

The sickening sob of regret

Echoes elegantly from my breast

As if a bird scrambling to leave

The shackles of it’s golden cage

I am a prisoner of my own choices

The bittersweet wine sipped & digested

From the broken chalice of sweet death

Angels of grace & mercy

Glance over this forgotten soul

Let the beauty of sweet inebriation

Release me from all that I know
